SAE1214 Bright Bar

S1214 is a low hardenability and low tensile carbon steel generally supplied cold drawn or turned and polished, with a typical tensile strength range of 370 – 760 Mpa and a Brinell hardness range of 105 – 225. Outstanding machinability, modest weldability, and reasonable ductility and strength. Because of its low hardenability, S1214 is typically used in its as-supplied state. It can, however, be carburized to achieve case hardnesses greater than Rc 60 with smaller chunks, though this decreases as section size increases.

All sections will have low core strength. It can also be carbonitriding, which has some benefits over carburizing. Due to its low carbon content, it will not respond suitably to flame or induction hardening, nor will it respond satisfactorily to nitriding due to the absence of suitable alloying elements. S1214 was explicitly developed as free-machining mild steel. It is widely used in all industry sectors for components and parts that require extensive machining but do not require high strength or impact resistance. All lightly anxious elements and machinery parts, either supplied or carburized as required, are typical applications.

Dhand Steels offers a broad array of solutions for steel bright bar requirements in all sizes and shapes. Technology has played an essential role in our journey, but so have the materials used to construct our world. Our products are well-known for their features, such as grain-free surfaces, method-performed corners (bright hexagonal bar), longevity, max hardness, resistance to corrosion, and dimensional accuracy.

SAE1214 Features

  • Long-lasting, heat-resistant, and impact-resistant
  • Low maintenance and exceptional quality
  • Highly pliable and resistant to brittle failure and corrosion
  • 100% crack-free surface finishing bright bars
  • High-quality testing

SAE1214 Forging

Heat to a maximum of 1300oC, hold until the temperature is homogeneous throughout the section, and then begin forging. Forge at no lower than 950oC. Air cooling is an option for finished forgings.

SAE1214 Heat Treatment

Annealing

Temperature to 890oC – 920oC, then relax in the furnace until the temperature is homogeneous throughout the section.

Carburising

Pack, salt, or gas carburize at 900oC – 920oC for sufficient time to develop the requisite case depth and amount of carbon, accompanied by an appropriate hardening/refineries and tempering cycle to improve case and core assets.

Refinement of the Core

Slowly excellent from carburizing temp and re-heat to 880oC – 900oC, hold till the heat is uniform all through the segment, and quench in oil or water as necessary.

Hardening of the Case

Re-heat to 760oC – 790oC after core refining, hold until the temperature is uniform across the section, and quench in water.  Temper immediately while the hand is still warm.

After Carburising, Core Refining, and Case Hardening, Tempering is performed.

Re-heat to 120oC – 230oC, hold for 1 hour per 25 mm section, and cool in still air.

  1. Softening will enhance case hardenability while only slightly reducing case hardness. It will also make it less prone to crushing cracks.

SAE1214 Normalizing

Heat to 900oC – 940oC and hold for 10 – 15 minutes, to ensure that the temperature is uniform all through the portion. Even now air keeps you cool.

Stress Reduction

Heat to 500oC – 700oC, hold for 1 hour per 25mm of segment, and excellent in the still air.

SAE1214 Heat Treatment Remarks

Heating temperatures, heating rates, cooling rates, and soaking instances will vary depending on factors including such workpiece material size/shape, furnace type used, quenching form of media, and workpiece material transfer facilities, among others. For the best outcomes, kindly contact your heat treater.

SAE1214 Machining

S1214 has excellent machinability in the bright cold taken or did turn and refined as supplied condition, by far the finest of our scope of bright steels. All operations including such digging, milling, riveting, trying to tap, turning, and so on can be decided to carry out adequately as per machine manufacturers instructions for appropriate tool type, feeds, and speeds.

SAE1214 Welding

Because of its higher sulfur content, which can induce porosity and hot shortness during welding, S1214 has moderate weldability. As a result, welding should be avoided whenever possible, except in non-critical applications, where the going to follow welding procedure can be used as a guide. Welding in the carburized state is not recommended.

SAE1214 Welding Process

Welding electrodes should be chosen with sulphurised steels in mind. For appropriate electrodes and other welding consumables, please contact your welding consumables supplier. Although a pre-heat or post-heat is not usually necessary, pre-heating more extensive sections at 50 oC can be beneficial, as can a post-weld stress relieve if possible.
